CAMP BOWERS EAGLE SCOUT WALK

Attaining the rank of Eagle Scout is a tremendious accomplishment. In honor of this accomplishment, the Cape Fear Council request that you place an "Eagle pad" on the Eagle Walk at Camp Bowers so others can remember your accomplishment.

The Eagle Walk begins at the Administration Building at Camp Bowers and it is hoped that it will continue to the Dining Hall as Scouts earn Scouting's highest award. The walk is made up of 18 inch squares of concrete which have been inscribed by Eagle Scouts. You make your own pad and the Camp Ranger, will assist you in placing it in the Eagle Walk.

Directions for Making your Eagle Walk pad:

Making the frame in which to pour the concrete:

1. Cut two 2x4s 21 inches long

2. Cut two 2x4s 18 inches long

  • 3. Nail these 2x4s together If the frame will be used to make more than one pad, consider screwing them together with 2 inch sheet rock screws. This will make it easier to take the frame apart when removing the pad from the frame.

    5. Measure the inside deminison of the frame. Is it 18 inches square? If not refer back to the drawing.

  • Pouring the pad:

      1. Mix the mortar mix according to directions. It is best mixed in a wheel barrow and worked with a hoe and shovel. Takes about 60 pounds of mortar mix for the pad.
  • 2. Place frame on level ground. Use a sandy area or place plastic on the ground under the frame. There will be some mess.
  • 3. Pour mix into frame until frame is half full.

  • 4. Optional: Place 2x4 wire or chicken wire on top of poured mix. This makes the pad stronger.
  • 5. Fill the frame with mix to the top of the frame.

  • 6. Take a board longer than the frame is wide and lay it across the frame. Move the board back and forth slowly across the top of the frame to create a level surface on top of the concrete.
  • Putting the message on the pad:

    1. Let the concrete stand 5 to 10 minutes before writing on the pad.

  • 2. Personalize the pad with your NAME, TROOP NUMBER and THE YEAR YOU RECEIVED YOUR EAGLE SCOUT AWARD. You may need to use a stick with a rounded point to do this writing. The stick should be about the size of you ring finger.
  • 3. Let the concrete pad sit in the frame for 24 hours or longer before removing the frame.

    4. The top of the pad should be flat with nothing protruding above the surface. Items protruding above the surface create a tripping hazard.

Bring your Eagle pad to the Administration Building at Camp Bowers:

    1. The Camp Ranger will assist you in putting your pad in the Eagle Walk.

    2. Direct any questions to the Camp Ranger at 910-866-4489.
